Season's Meetings

21413952
Season's Meeting is a good book. The characters are very well developed. It is about Catherine Birch who works all the time and hates Christmas because she lost her family around that time as a child. She has everything she could want money wise and is quite the hard ass at her job that she is very good at. This is the first Christmas for Catherine without granny Birch. With no family left she just want's to be alone. Her best friend from college Beth finally gets her to relent into coming to her house for Christmas but she misses her plane and has to ride with Beth's wife Katie's cousin Holly Daniels. Holly and Catherine are different as night and day. Holly is outgoing and loves her job owning her own bakery and is as poor as Catherine is rich. Holly is younger with tattoos and piercings and still burgeoning where Catherine is more conservative and reserved and set in her ways. On the road trip to Beth & Katie's house, a monster snow storm rages and they end up stuck in a ditch in the middle of nowhere. I thought the book was going to be more about their survival and if they lived or died. Unfortunately the story did not focus on that struggle. They where rescued after not much time and had to spend time in a little town. It was during that time that they fell for each other. But it is complicated because they are such different people. Basically this is a romantic story about two people falling in love. Falling in love is a beautiful thing and the book is full of that beauty. I get falling for someone so fast. That is what lesbians do..... bring the U-Haul on the second date. But completely changing your whole life was a little much to grasp. Plus Beth's set-up for Catherine what was she thinking? If she has been her best friend so long you would think she would want better for her. I wanted to give it more stars but those things held me back from that. It is an enjoyable book especially for the hopeless romantic.

Louisiana Fever

18880910

Louisiana Fever by D.J. Donaldson was a great Read. The book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved how there are so many aspects to the story that all tied together perfectly. The author always got to the point and did not drag anything out which I really appreciated. What is this book about? Most of the story is told by two people in the book; chief medical examiner Andy Broussard and psychologist Kit Franklyn who works with Broussard in the medical examiners office. One day Kit goes to meet a secret admirer who dies at her feet. Broussard learns not soon enough that this admirer is a carrier of a lethal pathogen similar to the deadly Ebola virus. People are now starting to turn up at the morgue, dead of corpse, with this virus. This book has really good writing about the process that takes place in the morgue and the science was flawless. I loved that the virus actually had a voice in the book by saying what it had to do and the situations it was in. Very cool and original. Broussard where is Kit? She has has not showed up for work. Hmm... Kit has been taken by the bad guys. Her boyfriend Teddy goes looking for her and then vanishes too. Let me add I was so happy that it just spoke very little of their feeling for each other and not a bunch of romance added in. Thank You Donaldson. The description of the bayou was told in such a way you felt as if you where there among it. Now this is where the review gets tricky because I do not want to give anything away. Remember me mentioning bad guys? Well, these guys are cold blooded killers who are trying to make a quick buck smuggling in the the U.S. birds. Are they only bringing in birds? Believe me it all ties together so nicely. Who lives? Who dies? Not going to tell you but I will say this is a book you should not miss. Louisiana Fever is action packed, book gripping, cannot stop reading so you will be up all night type of book!

Mind Over Manners

12565374
If you are interested in medical issues this is a book for you. It is also has a wonderful message about never giving up. Mind Over Manners is about Laura Claridge and her battles with cancer. Laura started to have severe mental issues and was admitted into St. Vincent's which is a hospital for people with mental problems. During that time doctors found out that she had a very rare type of cancer Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma. PCNSL was what was making her act like she had a mental problem. The book goes into great detail about what PCNSL is and what Laura had to go through. It has great medical detail. Not only did she have to deal with PCNSL but also many other dangerous diseases arouse. I do not want to give away the whole book and tell you very much that happens to Laura since the book is not that long. Laura Claridge is an amazingly strong and brave person. She endured more than I could ever imagine in one lifetime. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read detailed books about medicine. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is going through a hard time. It defiantly gives you a different look on life.

THE MARTIAN ROCKS!!!

18007564
I think that The Martian by Andy Weir is amazing! If I could I would give it extra stars. The Martian is about astronaut Mark Watney who is apart of the first crew to land on Mars. On the first day landing on Mars a huge dust storm erupts and the crew needs to leave before the MAV (Mars ascent vehicle) tumbles over and they get trapped on Mars. On the way to the MAV Mark gets hit by a piece of flying debris and gets separated from the crew. When the crew could not find him and thought he was dead, they left Mars without him. But there would not have been much of a book if he really died. So now Mark is stranded on Mars all by himself. Mark now has to keep himself alive until NASA can figure out if they can even rescue him.

This book is full of great science that is correct, which is hard to find in a book. Except for two parts; one that I am not sure of and that was flipping the rover. But the second one really Mr. Weir canvas cannot be good enough even if it was made by NASA to be a heat shield. The main character Mark is laugh out loud hilarious. At no point does this book ever lag. I felt like I was the one on Mars it is so full of great detail. Mark is a botanist not an engineer and has to keep every machine that gives him air, water, heat, etc running perfectly or he would die. You will laugh out loud at the things he comes up with to stay alive. I think this book would be a great read for everyone. There is so much that I would love to go on about but I do not want to give away anything I do not have to. It is a read multiple times kind of book. I wanted to restart reading it right after I finished.

    Maxine Wore Black

    20702913

Maxine Wore Black by Nora Olsen is a story that takes place around a transgender girl named Jayla. Jayla is a shy person and feels inadequate about herself due to a lot of different reasons. She is a high school dropout and due to that has to take menial jobs just to get by. One night Jayla and her best friend Francesca go to gay prom and during this event Jayla meets Maxine and completely falls for her. Maxine has a girlfriend already but this does not stop her from pursuing Jayla. Jayla feels bad that Maxine wants to cheat on her girlfriend Becky with her so she tells Maxine that while she is still in a relationship nothing can happen. Now at this point the book was dragging and I was hoping it would pick up and get better. Wrong. It did not get better it just got strange. Maxine kills Becky then calls Jayla to help her cover it up. Which Jayla does because she is so in love with Maxine yet she barely knows her. Who in the world would do that? Jayla thinks Maxine "belonged to royalty of another time period". The police decide that becky committed suicide. Which does not add up. Maxine is actually takes control of Jayla's life and she basically lets her. And at no point did I ever see this as the abused partner scenario like the author tried to make it look like. Jayla knew that Maxine committed murder but loved her so much it did not matter.

The book gets weird and there are parts of it that had been properly put in the book and pursued it would have given the story some bit of a realistic and enjoyable plot. Jayla's best friend Francesca who now never sees or talks to her is not concerned about her. Why? Or like the autistic child Jayla would babysit for who saw the whole murder take place. Jayla tells Becky's mother in a letter what really happened to her daughter and that Maxine killed her. What Becky's mother did made no sense. Even Becky's best friend Danny who she has known her whole life knows Maxine is guilty. I tried not to give too much information away about the story.

Watch out could Maxine still be out there?

    Taken By Storm

    23249653

    MY REVIEW

Lives depend on two women when a train derails high in the remote Alps due to an avalanche. Hudson Mead who is an extreme skier and Steffi Graham who is a rock climber set out over deadly terrain to get help for the others who are buried in the train under the snow from the avalanche some severely injured with sparse food available. Steffi is a librarian who does not have much experience in the harsh dangerous ice and snow conditions and to make the situation more difficult has a lack of confidence in herself. Hudson on the other hand is a reporter for the Associated Press having been in war zones, natural disasters, wherever the story took her but Hudson has no climbing skills and is not used to relying on anybody but herself and her cameraman Joe who is her best friend.

This is one of the most amazing fiction adventure stories I have ever read. I found my hands hurting from gripping my Kindle so hard do to the fact this story has you by the seat of your pants the whole way through. The book also goes deeper into peoples psyche on the will to survive and having to put full trust into someone you do not know. All the characters are very well developed. This is considered a lesbian book. I assume do to the fact there are lesbians in the book and it has a very small romance part between women. I believe this book is for everyone! If you love adventure books you will love this one.
Read it you will not regret it!

    Hidden Girls Of Afghanistan

    18077802
What Underground girls of Kabul is about: "In Afghanistan, a culture ruled almost entirely by men, the birth of a son is cause for celebration and the arrival of a daughter is often mourned as misfortune. A bacha posh (literally translated from Dari as “dressed up like a boy”) is a third kind of child – a girl temporarily raised as a boy and presented as such to the outside world. Jenny Nordberg, the reporter who broke the story of this phenomenon for the New York Times, constructs a powerful and moving account of those secretly living on the other side of a deeply segregated society where women have almost no rights and little freedom."

It took me longer to read this book than other books. Why? Because every time I sat down and read it I would get so angry reading about the complete ignorance of both the men and women of Afghanistan. Our country (U.S.A) might have gone in and helped to set-up some type of government that is supposed to be democratic but it is far from that. The few women that are a part of the parliamentary system do not speak at all except for one Azita but the men basically ignore her. The seats of the parliament are still corrupt with the taliban, drug smugglers, gun runners, etc. Azita is an educated women who is part of the Afghanistan parliament that has a daughter who is a bacha posh since she could not have a son. Azita still believes in all the ignorance of Afghanistan.

Women/girls are treated as cattle to be sold to the family who can offer the best price or a better social standing for the woman's family. To quote the book "Her virginity is capital belonging to her father, and it is his to be traded. The more sheltered, demure, and quiet parents can demonstrate a daughter to be, the higher the value of her virginity". Even if it is her first cousin. Mothers tell their daughters at a young age that the only thing for them in life is to give their husbands boys when they are sold off. Women will have as many children as they possibly can. If they are unable to birth a son it is the woman's fault because they are yet able to understand that the male sperm determines the sex of the baby. So this is where the bacha posh comes into play.

A girl will be turned into a boy for many reasons. Afghanistan's believe that if a little boy is present in the house for the mother to look at it will increase the woman's chances of having a boy. In a poor family girls will be used as boys for physical labor at whatever the family does to make a living. The majority of the time the mother just does not give birth to a son and the whole family is looked down upon so until puberty is about to arrive the girl will live as a boy. This will than give a little girl the rare opportunity to go outside and experience the world they live in. Many people in their community know that they are bacha posh and look the other way. So a bacha posh lives with all this freedom in the years that they as a person are developing and their mind is growing maybe or maybe not understanding that they will lose all this and become a slave to a man. Most change back to their birth sex with no problem they say but some do not feel as they are women anymore.

There is now a major problem since women can not live on their own in Afghanistan and are property to be sold.
Have they been brainwashed into feeling like boys? Is it a deep seeded fear about losing their freedom and having to go be a baby machine? Or could it possibly be something deeper than both of those and that they are  really are transgender or gay?  Why do this to a child?

I did not give away much of the book. There is so much more to it. I gave it 4 stars due the incredible writing and for the exposure of how the culture might be ruled by men but the women are just as much to blame for their own situation.

    RUN!!!

    20502208

In this rare insider’s view into contemporary North Korea, a high-ranking counterintelligence agent describes his life as a former poet laureate to Kim Jong-il and his breathtaking escape to freedom.

    MY REVIEW
Dear Leader is about Jang Jin-sung who was North Korea’s State Poet Laureate and his escape from North Korea. The book thought was not just about that it was an indepth look at a political system that has no concern for its citizens or the world. Jang Jin-sung had a job that was very high up on the political ladder. He was one of the few that had access to all literature South Korean then changed the content to brainwash the North Korean people to think South Korea were supporters of Kim Jong-il. Due to Jang Jin-sungs level in North Korea society he got special provisions. He never went hungry and had a nice place to live unlike the rest of the people.

Everything in North Korea revolves around Kim Jong-il. The people are starving to death in the streets and to make it more horrid there is a actual department of government that goes around poking people with sticks to see if they are dead. If you have read other North Korean books you have had an insight into the prison work camps, only pictures of the Leader, etc. But this book is different due to the fact that Jang Jin-sung is so high up in the government. He is able to tell the outside world things that might be unknown otherwise. This book is an important read into the workings of the North Korean government. Yet at times it can be daunting to read.

When Jang Jin-sung and Young-min made the mad dash to escape it read like a action packed thriller. They were on the run with two countries after them. They were in survival mode and if it was not for the few people that helped none would have got out alive. I found the end a little hard to believe. It was vague on how that number he called made it all happen. But it is a good book and should be on your to read list.

    What FAITH ?

    22549708
    MY BAD REVIEW
The Faith by John Leahy is a very weak plotted book. As the book begins the main character Ella is returning home from rehabilitation due to a problem with cocaine. Ella had a lucrative career as a hedge fund trader before going into rehab. After Ella got clean she decided she did not go back to work due to all this money she has, how much we are never really told but when someone need funds she can write huge checks. Ella meet Alicia who was in a band and became involved with her. Ella moved into Alicia's place. It struck me as strange that Ella started calling herself a lesbian, while both of the characters still wanted to be with men also. That would make them bisexual especially since they both had affairs with men. The writer really messed that up and if you read the book you will find some other strange things in their relationship. Also here is another not right situation that took place in the book. Alicia had a child names Rosie that was 5 years old but Alicia did not want to be a part of her life when she had gotten pregnant because she was in a band that was doing great and did not want to give the possibility of fame up, which did not work out for her. So one day Ella convinces her to be with her daughter and then they are one happy family. The kid is 5 I do not see how that would be possible. Oh that is my mommy! I love you! After never being a part of her life. I do not think so. Ella decides to fund Alicia in a new band and CD all expenses paid. Who just has unlimited money? Through out the book Ella is always surrounded by people with cocaine, everybody has some. Does she relapse or worse. That is not for me to tell. Unless you ask me on this blog and for this one I might give away the ending.

    BEND YOUR BRAIN

    MY REVIEW

Bend Your Brain is a fabulous book of all types of puzzles ranging from easy to hard that will keep your brain in shape and you have so much fun in the process. This book has 5 different brain building categories. They are visual perception, word skills, critical thinking, coordination and memory. The book explains that these are in each different part of the brain such as, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, cerebellum and temporal lobe. So for each section of the brain you would do a different building category. Interesting. Bend your brain has great puzzles like a 850 # dot to dot, making words out of pictures, plotting numbers on a grid to come up with a word (this is where having taken algebra came in handy)  and so much more! There was a few puzzles that I thought are a little odd: Whose Famous Mouth Is It?, this odd form of Battleship that I have yet to figure out and place the movies shown on the page in order of their release date. Really? That is why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.  Bend Your Brain has 151 puzzles to keep you on your toes.

    NEST

    MY REVIEW
Nest by Esther Ehrlich is a book for middle school age children but I think that many adults would like it also. It is not a short book in any sense it is 338 pages long. It is a well written book and I enjoyed it immensely. Nest takes place in 1972 and is about the Orenstein family. Chirp is the youngest family member and the one telling the story. She has a older sister Rachel and a mother who is a dancer and the father is a psychiatrist. Chirp got her name do to her love and knowledge of birds. She spends most of her free time at the marsh watching for all different types of birds. That year she started the sixth grade and makes a friend she never thought would, Joey. One day Chirps mom gets sick and is diagnosed with a horrible disease. After Chirps mom gets ill nothing is ever the same for her again. The book is as full of humor as sadness. There is so much more to this book that I can tell. Stinky clams, swan boats and so much more. Nest is full of surprises. Since this book takes place in the early seventies I would hope that children understand before they read this that medicine has been changing.

Everything Changes, Yet Some Things Stay The Same

    20702918
    MY REVIEW
I really loved Everything Changes a coming of age story when 17 year old Raven finally realizes she is gay. When Morgan comes along feelings Raven has never felt before explode inside her something she had never had with a guy. Morgan is in college and has been out as a lesbian for awhile. Morgen has had relationships before and really likes Raven but does not want to take a step backwards in her life having to hide a relationship. Is Raven too afraid to come out about being a lesbian all these feelings are so new. As all young gay people go through Raven is terrified how her friends, kids at school and family will handle this. This YA novel is an adoring read for people of all ages. It takes you back to your first crush and it also shows how hard it is for young gay people making sense of their feelings and life. There is so much to this book. You will really enjoy this read.

    Raising Cubby

    18112122
    MY REVIEW
Raising Cubby was different than any other book that I have read regarding a father and son relationship. The writing of the book itself was a little stranger than most and I think that is due to the fact that John Robison has aspergers and as he said in the book he communicates differently than most people, so it was probably written exactly as he thinks and speaks. Nothing wrong with it at all it was a good insight into the mind of someone with aspergers. This book is incredibly interesting on how John leads his life and thinks. He is very literal about everything such as when Cubby (Jake) was little he liked to be tossed up in the air but he became to heavy John decided to spin him by his arms in circles (like most kids have) Cubby's mother started screaming his arms are going to come out of the sockets John actually believed it. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments. They went to many interesting places like nuclear power plants, navy ships, rail yards and dams. Cubby loved these things. He was interested in so many things beyond his years.  Some things were slightly disturbing. Like John explaining that stone statues of people or anything really are real but turned to stone by witches. Cubby was a smart child but because of his limitations he got himself into some big trouble with the Feds. You got to read the book to find out the rest! It is worth the read!

    Edge of Awareness

    20702666

    MY REVIEW

I have had the privilege to review this book before it has been released to the public. I very much enjoyed reading Edge of Awareness written by C.A. Popovich. It is a laid back book that you would enjoy to curl up and relax with. The characters are very well developed as is the book. The story takes place in Michigan with the two main characters being Danna and Maria. Danna runs a grooming school for animals that her mother owns. Danna is a lesbian who has been out as far back as she can remember. Running the school takes up a lot of her time but she has not been in a actual relationship since high school and would really like to settle down with someone not just saturday night flings she meets at the bar. Maria is going through her third divorce. She grew up in a religious family and religion is a large part of her life including singing in a church choir. Maria also owns a hair salon. I like the coincidence that maria does human hair and Danna does animals. Danna and Maria meet when Maria brings her dog Frankie into the grooming school to get his nails clipped. I do not want to give away too much. Sparks do fly between them but Maria has never even thought about women before and is not sure what she is feeling or how it fits into her religious life. Is Danna even willing to risk getting hurt by a straight woman if she gets the opportunity?  Will there just be a friendship between them? This is very much a self discovery book for most of the characters in it. I hope you take the time to read it.

Neugeboren went in for emergency quintuple bypass surgery and he came out with a bent penis!

    22554065

The book Open Heart basically is about the medical field and how bad it is. In the first chapter it discusses Jay Neugeboren being misdiagnosed by two different doctors and since he has friends in high places he was able to go to Yale Hospital, getting the best care and the right diagnosis. He had almost 100% occlusion of his heart's arteries and had to have bypass surgery. It goes on about the fact that they really do not know that much about heart disease. Jay also lets us in on a little fact regarding his penis, he got scar tissue due to the catheter he had in it during his surgery, adding up to a bent penis. Thank you for sharing Jay. There was a lot said regarding how the science and the art of medicine have become dangerously separated, that the doctor for many reasons does not spend enough time with the patient, yet has fancy tools that they might not even be experienced in using trying to pacify the patient. The book tells us everything we already know. Doctors are not trained or have the ability to connect with patients. The book also goes on about topics from AIDS to Psychotherapy. At times it felt disjointed and was not sure why a topic was part of the book. I thought the book was going to be about a man being ill having heart surgery and his journey back to a regular life. I was so far off.

Is the whole family crazy? You need to check this out!

Mother, Mother is a fascinating book. Once you start reading it will be close to impossible to put it down. The characters are so well developed. It is a nonstop physiological thriller. Here is a taste of a small bit of a huge hit.

The book is about a dysfunctional family the Hursts. The mother Josephine is a ball of crazy while the father Douglas is an alcoholic. The three children Rose, Violet and Will all have their own set of problems. Josephine wants her and her family to appear impeccable to the rest of the world at any cost. Rose is the eldest daughter who is Josephines ballerina doll that will be a star one day no matter what. Is that what Rose wants to do with her life? Violet is the middle daughter who has taken to a religion called "Jainist", shaved her head and is starving herself. Violet is a huge embarrassment to the family. Why would Violet act that way? Is she crazed too? The youngest child Will who has been diagnosed with Asperger's and has seizures. Will will do anything for his mother to make her see how smart and perfect he is to obtain her love. Will made my skin crawl.

Mother, Mother, is full of twist, turns and surprises. You might think you know what is going to happen next but you will be dead wrong. Is the whole family crazy? That would be for you to read and see.

    MY REVIEW
I am sure this is a book for a lot of people. When I read the discription I thought the description sounded like a hilarious book. I can say I have never read a parody so I guess all I can think that is they are different from other books in the humor section of books. I did not finish the book. I tried two times. I found that it was too vulgar, and I did not find it funny. The story read like a 8yr. old boy wrote it. I always have finished books that I have started in the past but this was just too much buggers and bathroom humor humor for me. I say STAY AWAY!

The fugues take him back to the 1966 when he was on Normandy beach causing him to suffer the horror repeatedly throughout his life. His wife has passed and a nice lady named claire comes to his house to help care for him. But in this story nothing is as it seems! Something happens that changes everything! But what? Telling any more detail will give away too much. It is a great story and will help people who have not experienced war know how it can destroy and mess with a persons mind. It is exciting, haunting and full of events that will keep you reading until you get to the end. You will not be disappointed, you never will be if you read anything written by Susan May.

If You Miss This Read You Will Regret It!!

    20824514
    MY REVIEW
Another incredibly creative novella by Susan May. Susan May has a brilliant imagination. This story is about a family going on a family vacation. On the way to the resort they decided to take the scenic route. During the drive their pre-teen boys are fighting the whole time and Pam came down with a horrible migraine. Pams migraine got so bad Michael found a place to stay for the night so she could get control of her pain so she could enjoy the vacation. He came upon a town Broken Springs that had a small bed and breakfast that had accommodations. What else can I say without giving the story away? Nothing. It is so worth taking a half hour or fifteen minutes (depending on how fast you read)to read this marvelous story.
Entering Broken Springs population 402 as they leave one of them thought the sign might have seen 404 on the population sign this time at a brief glance.
I hope you are now intrigued..

    My Review
This is the first book that I have read about time travel. The main character Dawn had to keep repeating her sons death over and over. Can she change the outcome? Will she live in this horrible loop in time forever? This is an exciting adventure of a read. The one thing that keep me from giving it the fifth star was that the ending could have been better. What really did happen at the end?

    Disposable Children

    MY REVIEW

The book Nobody comes is a true account of Anthony Cleary and his wife Carmel trying to adopt a Romanian child after the revolution against Romania's corrupt communist leader Ceausescu. They had witness horrible conditions on t.v. taking place in that country especially in the orphanages that sparked their desire to rescue a child. The book basically explains all the steps that Cleary had to go through to get a child out of Romania and into the UK. Like a lot of other books I have read the orphanages are in deplorable condition. The children are more abused than actually taken care of. It took a lot of help from a friend he made while getting the run around from both Romania and the UK. Getting anything done when in Romania took bribing with cigarettes, soap, toothpaste and even vodka. Did he get to adopt the child he found? You will have to read the book because I do not like to give away the ending. There were a few things that I did not understand about the situation. His wife did not do anything regarding the adoption. You would think if you wanted to be a mother you would put things on hold and go fight along with your husband. She really was only mentioned less than half a dozen times in the book. Also there was a part whan he had the child but instead of spending time with his possible new child he left it with a stranger for almost a week so he would not have to worry about looking after it and went sight seeing instead. I could not believe it. How bad did these people want to be parents? For those two reasons I had to drop it a star. If you are interested in this topic you would enjoy this book.
